Life Among the Stars

Looking up to the blackened sky above,
Brilliant jewels twinkle in the night.
Stars fading in and out,
Planets with their steady light.

A foreign finger pokes the sky,
On a sapphire gem it does linger.
Earth's blue rays never wavering,
The world rests on a child's tiny finger.

"What is that?" the child asks.
"That is Earth," answers a parental tone.
"And is there life there?" the little one demands.
"Of that, it is not known."
"But surely, father, we are not all alone?"

Notes

I've always believed that there is other sentient life out there in the universe, and so I've written several poems on that topic, this being one of them.
